M.D. Óscar Soto Angona

Óscar Soto Angona, M.D., is a psychiatrist, researcher, and therapist whose currently works at Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu, where he serves as an attending psychiatrist in the Intensive Psychiatric Rehabilitation Service (SERPI) and as a researcher within the ANIMA group (Advanced New Interventions for the Mind and Awareness). His clinical and academic trajectory has been shaped by a long-standing interest in understanding how profound subjective experiences can catalyze lasting psychological change, particularly in individuals with treatment-resistant mental disorders.  Within the framework of his doctoral research at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, his work focuses on the psychological mechanisms of change underlying the therapeutic effects of psychedelics and other altered-state interventions. Alongside his medical and scientific training, he has pursued formal studies in philosophy, (Master’s degree in Theoretical and Practical Philosophy at UNED), which informs his interdisciplinary approach to mental health and consciousness.He has participated as an investigator and therapist in multiple international clinical trials and research studies involving substances such as psilocybin, ayahuasca, 5-MeO-DMT, and esketamine, and has extensive training and clinical experience in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy. In parallel with his clinical and research work, he is an invited lecturer in postgraduate and master’s programs focused on psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy and the study of consciousness. Óscar is also co-founder and Vice President of the Spanish Society of Psychedelic Medicine. Across his clinical practice, research, and teaching, he adopts a humanistic, integrative, and evidence-based perspective, with a strong commitment to fostering dialogue between psychiatry, neuroscience, philosophy, and spirituality, in pursuit of a more holistic understanding of the mind and mental health.
